Post-Retirement: Return To Work After Retirement

Feature

Six years ago, Anees Fatima was teaching fervently in a class packed with scores of students. Her career was going smoothly until her retirement came. After she retired, she faced a burning question what to do next?

The question itself is a puzzling topic to the retirees. There is a notion floating about many retirees choose leisure in lieu of work. However, the research said otherwise.

An economist at Harvard Medical School named Nicole Maestas in his analysis study found that most people try retirement, then change their minds. Moreover, a survey from RAND Corporation, found nearly 40 percent of workers beyond 65 had formerly, at a point, retired.

“We definitely see evidence that retirement is fluid,” said Kathleen Mullen, a RAND senior economist. “There’s less of the traditional schedule: work to a certain age, retire, and see the world. We see people lengthening their careers.”

The conventional view of retirement as an abrupt exit from the labor market is no longer valid today. Alternatively, a rising number of retirement-age adults work in paid jobs after retirement.

Take for instance, Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun, who joined the Pakistan Navy in Dec 1970. In his distinguished career, he received numerous medals including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. He retired, eventually. But the retirement wasn't working for the admiral. He, then, return to work as Director General of National Centre for Maritime Policy Research. Also, serving as visiting faculty at the Bahria University.

Working is the best way to remain tied up. A similar study by the Oregon University, a research university in Eugene found that working after 65 may add several years to your life. The study found that working mere one year past age 65 can lower your risk of death by 11%.

As many retirees discover, leaving one life to start any other is challenging. Michael Long Hurst is a former shrink who interviewed 200 retirees to grasp retirement for a major research project.

"When people are in the workforce they often have recreational activities that they're very fond of, such as golf or fishing, and they envisage that that's what they will be doing in retirement," he said.

"Now that's OK during what's known as the honeymoon phase of retirement, which is the time where it just feels like a long holiday, but after a while, those recreational activities, there is just not enough in them to provide satisfaction or a sense of purpose."

Manzoor Farooqui, an erstwhile senior auditor of NBP (National Bank of Pakistan), was unwinding his recently-retirement period at home. When, his father inquired him about his retirement plans, "I have worked for 37 years in NBP and wouldn't need to do anything else," he said.  Following which his father rejoined, "If you possess Croesus treasure, it will too exhausted, if you ought not to do any work."

Subsequently, Anwar-ul-Haq Farooqui (Manzoor's father), who was also a noted doctor, furnished his unique formula of dentifrice to him. Which he had previously tested in Rangoon, during his sojourn and had received positive feedbacks.

At first, Manzoor was skeptical of the effectiveness of the product, however, all his reservations polished off when he received extremely good response about his tooth-powder.

To avoid mental anguish, depression, and frustration as many older adults who retired experienced. Manzoor started to work in his own tuck-shop near to his house.

During his youth, he has a penchant for writing. Soon after retirement, he fulfilled his dream to pen a book. His inspiration was derived from the likes of Naseem Hijazi and Ismat Chughtai

He, later, then wrote 3 books in three different genres.

Now 78, content with his life, he scoured his utensils and do daily household chores.

The question itself is a puzzling topic to the retirees. There is a notion floating about many retirees choose leisure in lieu of work. However, the research said otherwise.

Brawl At PactMUN
Feature by Komal Qureshi
2k18/MC/74
A friend of mine suggested me to participate in MUN (model united nations) basically it’s an educational as well as entertaining event of three days, it’s meant to engage students and allow them to develop deeper understanding into current world issues. It didn’t sound much fun to me so I actually didn’t want to go first but because of peer pressure, I went there.
First day was all about the opening ceremony, on the other day we attended sessions and the third day was closing ceremony along with an award-giving eve and a Qawali night of Sabri Brothers.
On third day, we received our certificate of participation and awards for being best delegate. On the same day, at night we reached there to attend qawali along with our male friends and guess what? We were forbidden to sit with them because according to them, there were separate seating arrangements for males and females, we were astonished as well as upset that we cannot enjoy the qawali night with our friends. We claimed that there is no such rule in MUN’s and nothing like this was even mentioned before we have invited our friends and we will sit with them that’s it! Slowly and gradually the crowd started staring at us as our voices were raised up.
This rule was acceptable as the venue where MUN was happening was a girls school we were expecting such thing so it was not a valid reason to create a mess with the authority but no matter what we still created a brawl there, maybe we wanted to generate a scene there just for fun, so we started yelling at them and accused them for their stupid, old fashioned rules and policies. Watching us fighting, some random people over there who were also annoyed by this rule, came and joined us. As the situation was getting out of hands the president, security general, director general and some teachers came to talk to us and tried to handle the condition. At first i was as excited as it was my first serious fight with guys but then it got worst.
A guy from the authority who was president came and started misbehaving with me and my friends he also pushed back a male friend of mine and in return my friend slapped him, there was 5-6 seconds silence as they both were staring at each other and the president was like what the hell has just happened to me and then BOOM, a massive brawl was held there, they both started beating the hell out of each other everybody started running here and there, a huge mess was created, the whole event was ruined but the only people who didn’t cared about the fight was the Qawals, they didn’t even bothered to stop singing.
As an enormous mob was assemble there, somebody literally snatched my side bag from my hand and ran away in which I was having my brand new glasses, some amount of money and my ID card, but I was too busy in fighting that I didn’t even make the effort to look back at that person who robbed me.
Well, the fight was ended by a male teacher, at the end the president forced us to leave the event, but we were being obstinate as always meanwhile, the president asked us to take our money back which we paid to be in the event and then just go away. On listening to this we gave each other a look and instantly agreed on this deal. He was trapped in his own words and had to return our money-back which was against the policy of MUN so he had to pay that same amount of money to the organizers of pactMUN as well.
This is how my first fight was ended with a victory.

The province of Sindh is home to many palaces, forts, castles, folklores and different cultural buildings, which proves that the people living in Sindh have always had diversity in culture, tradition and religion. The proof of our diverse culture can also be seen in almost all the cities and villages of Sindh, perhaps, Mohatta Palace is in Karachi which is also a pretty good sign of having a diverse culture.
This famous cultural heritage is known with the name of Mohatta Palace which is present in the posh area, Clifton of Karachi. Inside every beautiful building there is a hidden story and in this building the story of true love can be seen in art, art that takes you deep in the chapters of history.
“Everybody cannot see the love in art” Caretaker of Mohatta Palace
The story behind the construction of the Mohatta Palace is an appealing story of love. It reminds us of the story of Taj Mahal, which is counted as one of the seven wonders of the world, it was built on the orders of the Emperor Shah Jehan in the memory of his wife’. The distinction between these two stories is that Shah Jehan built Taj Mahal after his wife passed away, whereas Mohatta palace was built in order to save his wife from dying.
Usman Damohi, a well-known Karachi historian, writes in his book Karachi Taareekh Kay Aaeenay Main
“In 1927, Shivratan Mohatta, a successful Marwari businessman, decided to build a luxurious house in the prosperous seaside neighbourhood of Clifton. The architect chosen for the assignment was Ahmed Hussein Agha, one of the first Muslim architects of India. He came from Jaipur to take up the assignment, taken from the biography of Shivratan Mohatta.”
The reason behind its building this luxurious monument was a serious illness that Mohatta’s wife suffered from. Doctors told Mohatta that the fresh winds of the sea would make his wife healthy again. Therefore, Shivratan had this enormous bungalow built in the previous century in Clifton, covering a very large area facing the sea.
This double-story heritage covers an area of 18,000 square feet, there hasn't been a single structure that could match the area that Mohatta Palace covers, neither before nor after Partition. Upon entering the palace, you first notice the mesmerising coloured windows on the exterior, a wall of stone, an arch and minarets; a stunning view of architectural splendour.
The rooms on the first floor are comforting also royal in their setting, an absolute comfortable place to visit. The second floor is a vast splendid room covering very large area, it's hard to look at a room and imagine it being used by a singular person.
Even today, if you go all the way up to the rooftop of the building, it might be possible to catch a view of the sea, though dull residential high-rises have surrounded the Mohatta Palace so completely that even the winds from the sea cannot reach their once favourite destination. Back when it was constructed, the occupants of the Mohatta Palace could enjoy not only the sea breeze, but a view of the clean and unpaved seashore, too.
On the rooftop is a magnificent structure with a central dome surrounded by smaller ones. This was meant to protect inhabitants from the severe heat of direct sunlight. In addition to the central structure, the building has four other minaret-domes on its corners.
While visiting Delhi in 2004 on an official visit, I met a gentleman. He was a businessman in Karachi who moved to Delhi after Partition. He told a story of Mohatta, who had been a good friend of the Quaid-e-Azam since long.
Mr Mohatta decided to live in Karachi, even after the Great Divide. But one day he was contacted by a powerful political officer of the country, who asked him to leavethe Mohatta Palace for some government office. According to the old gentleman, Mr Mohatta was stunned.
Then overnight, he decided to leave. The next day, he packed his and his family's belongings, migrating to Bombay. He handed over the keys of Mohatta Palace to its manager, instructing him to hand over a note to the politician concerned, saying that he could have simply gifted the palace on being requested rather than being ordered to do so.
Mr Mohatta and his family members never visited Karachi or for that matter any other city of Pakistan again."

The province of Sindh is home to many palaces, forts, castles, folklores and different cultural buildings, which is the proof that people living in this province have always had distinct cultures, traditions and religions. The proof of our diverse culture can also be seen in the city of lights, Karachi to be exact.
This famous cultural heritage is known with the name of Mohatta Palace which is present in the posh area of Karachi, known as Clifton. Inside every beautiful building there is a story hidden and in this building the story of true love is hidden deep in the chapters of history, which a few people know.
The caretaker of the Mohatta Palace showed me every single room of the palace  and told us me about the hidden story which the world doesn’t know.
The story behind the construction of the Mohatta Palace is a appealing story of love. It reminds us of the tale of the Taj Mahal, which is counted as one of the seven wonders of the world, it was built on the orders of the Emperor Shah Jehan in the memory of his wife’. The distinction between these two stories is that Shah Jehan built Taj Mahal after his wife passed away, while Mohatta had the palace built in order to save his wife from dying. Usman Damohi, a well-known Karachi historian, writes in his book Karachi Taareekh Kay Aaeenay Main:

The architect chosen for the assignment was Ahmed Hussein Agha, one of the first Muslim architects of India. He came from Jaipur to take up the assignment, taken from the biography of Shivratan Mohatta.
It is said that the reason behind its building this luxurious monument was a serious illness that Mohatta’s wife suffered from. Doctors had told Mohatta that the fresh winds of the sea would make his wife healthy. Thus, Shivratan had this enormous bungalow built in the previous century in Clifton, covering a very large area.
As per the officers of culture department, This double-story heritage covers an area of 18,000 square feet. There hasn't been a single structure that could match the area that Mohatta Palace covers, neither before nor after Partition. Upon entering the palace, you first notice the mesmerising coloured windows on the exterior, a wall of stone, an arch and minarets; a stunning view of architectural splendour.
The rooms on the first floor are comforting also royal in their setting, an absolute comfortable place to be in. The second floor is a beauty not to forget. It's hard to look at a room and imagine it being used by a singular person.
Even today, if you go all the way up to the rooftop of the building, it might be possible to catch a view of the sea, though dull residential high-rises have surrounded the Mohatta Palace so completely that even the winds from the sea cannot reach their once favourite destination. PROLONG SUN EXPOSURE CAN CAUSE UNEXPECTED CONCERNS.

Do you know that you still expose to UV rays from sun, even if you are indoor?
Our Earth is nothing without sun. If sun did not exist, our planet would be an ice ball and lifeless, hence sun serves major role in our daily life. Sun has so many essential benefits, such as keeping seas warm, stirring atmosphere, generating the weather cycle, and giving energy to green plants, which can not be denied. Although sun provide unlimited benefits to living organisms, sun can also cause other concerns, which could be threatening for living organisms.

Sun is abandoned of ultraviolet radiations (UVR), which are named ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet C (UVC). UVC is not as strong as UVA and UVB, therefore UVC does not reach on the surface of the Earth, while UVA and UVB reach on the surface of the Earth and the fact is UVA rays can enter through the windows of house, but under shelter UV rays do not cause any serious concern. UV rays are stronger between 10 am to 4pm and these peak hours should be avoided during strong index of UV rays, while the strength of UV rays depends on a number of factors, such as season of the year, distance from the equator, altitude, clouds, reflection of surfaces and content of the air.

We expose to sun light on daily basis, whether it could be long term or short term, varies person to person. However sun is the greatest source of vitamin D, excessive sun exposure is not necessarily important for vitamin D synthesis, because prolong sun exposure could raise more concerns than just vitamin D synthesis, sun does not provide humans vitamin D, rather human body is designed to make vitamin D synthesis, when the skin is exposed to sun light.Even then someone really wants to increase vitamin D from sun, morning sun light before 10 pm is considered to be safe for getting vitamin D. While sun is not only source of Vitamin D, but vegetables and fruits also provide human significant vitamin D and these sources are well studied for vitamin D.

People go out and let their skin expose to sun either for work or for tanning purpose, but the fact is, it not only speeds up ageing process, but it also increases the chances of skin cancer for those, who do not have enough melanins in their skin to protect against UV rays, because these melanin pigments work as an umbrella to prevent cancer in the skin and these melanins also give tanned colour to skin, while these melanins in the skin will not slow down ageing process.

UV rays penetrate into skin deeply and damage the fibres called elastin in the skin, these fibres are meant to maintain firmness and youth in the skin. When UV light penetrates deeply in the skin, it damages the fibre in skin and leads pre mature ageing. Sun exposure can also cause sun spots or age spots on the skin due to over production of melanins, so while the damage may not be visible in youth, but these age spots will become visible and stubborn later in life.

Skin cancer is one of the prior concern of prolong sun exposure in human, although high chances of skin cancer happen in US, since lack of melanins is the cause of cancer, sun can also cause skin cancer in other parts of the world. UV light causes basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer and it can also be severe blisters and sunburn, but these disease convert into melanoma later in life. Cumulative sun exposure can lead to eye cancer, when uv rays affect the skin around eyes, cause cataracts, cancer of the eyelid and it may cause macular degeneration.

Staying in sun for long time can cause dehydration. Dehydration happens when the body is exposed to sun and the body sweats to cool itself off, due to this reaction the hydration level of a body decreases and sun is the only thing, which can be blamed for dehydration. It usually happens during hot summer season, however dehydration can happen any seasons of the year.

When there is a sign of heat stroke, it means emergency, because heat stroke can terminate life in no time. Sun can cause heat stroke when body gets over heated during hot weather.Dehydration can also cause heat stroke, however heat stroke does not happen while staying indoor.

Taking care of the skin out door is crucial to protect the skin from UV rays, so these concerns will not occur. Using a good SPF 30+ reduces the risk of skin cancer and pre mature ageing, wearing SPF indoor is also important,as UVA can enter through windows. Drinking plenty of water can prevent heatstroke and dehydration and avoid direct sun light too. Remember prevention is always better than cure.
