The Girl Who
Stood Up For Herself

There are many people who stood up and worked for themselves
but there is less of an inspiring story. And in my life the most inspiring
story which I heard was of Shahnaz Alvi.
Growing up I heard many stories about her, some good and
some stories with extra spices but I wanted to know myself what it was all
about and to go into the depth and find out the real story; I got a hold of her
in a family party and out of curiosity I asked her that how did she manage to
get here in her life. She laughed at me so hard that I felt conscious of myself
& I wonder, did I ask something wrong? And her answer made me realize that
how cruel human can be. She said" thank God you didn't taunt me about my
jobs which usually people do". Adding further she apologized and said” I
am not used to people, asking me these type of question so when you asked me
about me about it I felt awkward & laugh it off as you were joking. But if
you really want to know then “At first it was not easy, I was living a life
worse than an animal & to change time made myself keep moving", I got
confused and asked her to explain what did she mean by that and what she told
me, was so terrible that I couldn't breathe for a second that how a family of 5
people lived in a apartment of 1 room in which they cooked and had a bathroom.
Nowadays we all want different rooms for our own. And how the world started to
get congest for them when the landlord said to take money from her for suicide.
She shared how her mother worked hard for her and the other children. Doing two
jobs at a time was not easy. Running a canteen in her school where she used to
study and going out and working in other people houses were the only two things
kept them on life.
She explained how after Matriculation she gave tuitions to
15 to 16 children and started helping her mother. When I asked her that what
the turning point of her life was, she said “when I had to do two jobs one from
6pm to 5am and second from 7am to 1pm that change my life", she told me
how people taunted that “doing a night job what type of girl she is?” and “how
is she getting this much money suddenly” but she never gave up because her
mother trusted her with her life. Going further she told me that how her cousin
asked her to apply in office jobs as it would give more money and how she
managed to go to Dubai.
Her struggle didn't end there; she had to live on floor
without any house on the very first day of Dubai. And worked for the company
for 2 an half month without getting paid for it, how she had to do a case for
passport and penalty money and never got her salary. Later on living there for
a month and continuing to find a job to work and earn for her siblings to
educate them and give them a life which she could not even think of for
herself.
Her story makes me see world from a total different
perspective. This gives me motivation that it’s never too late to stand up and
live for ourselves, for our dreams, for our parents because people will speak
but they will not feel and that’s the difference. I just wish that there can be
more Shahnaz Alvi. So that we can set our role models from a real life hero and
just not from any fictions.
